Overview

pep-5D6 is a synthetic peptide inhibitor designed to target the Beta-secretase 1 (BACE1) enzyme, which is a key protease involved in the production of amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides. The accumulation of Aβ in the brain is a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. pep-5D6 was identified through phage display technology and is modeled after the binding characteristics of the 5D6 monoclonal antibody. It functions by binding to the BACE1 enzyme and inhibiting its proteolytic activity, thereby reducing the cleavage of amyloid precursor protein (APP) and the subsequent formation of neurotoxic Aβ species. This peptide-based approach aims to provide a highly specific alternative to small-molecule BACE1 inhibitors, potentially minimizing off-target effects while maintaining therapeutic efficacy in slowing the progression of Alzheimer's disease.
