Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Peppermint oil is a volatile essential oil extracted from the leaves and flowering tops of the peppermint plant (Mentha piperita). It is primarily composed of menthol and menthone. Peppermint oil exhibits antispasmodic, carminative, choleretic, analgesic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and cooling properties. Its main mechanism of action involves relaxing gastrointestinal smooth muscle by blocking calcium channels (L-type Ca2+ channels), leading to reduced spasms in the digestive tract. This effect is largely attributed to its menthol component[4][6]. Peppermint oil also has topical analgesic effects due to its ability to activate cold-sensitive TRPM8 receptors in the skin and mucous membranes[6]. It is used as a dietary supplement for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), indigestion (often in combination with caraway), nausea (including chemotherapy-induced nausea), tension headaches (topical application), and other minor ailments such as muscle pain or itching[1][2][3][5]. Inhaled or topical forms are sometimes used for colds or respiratory symptoms due to decongestant effects. Peppermint oil is also widely used as a flavoring agent in foods and oral care products.
