Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Peppermint water is a traditional herbal medicinal product consisting of an aqueous solution containing a small amount of peppermint oil (Mentha x piperita L.), typically 2.5 microlitres per 5 ml oral solution[3][8]. It is used primarily for the symptomatic relief of minor digestive complaints such as dyspepsia (indigestion), flatulence (gas), and stomach cramps[3][4][5][8]. The mechanism of action is attributed to the antispasmodic effects of peppermint oil, which relaxes gastrointestinal smooth muscle and may help absorb intestinal gases[5]. This effect is largely mediated by menthol, the main constituent in peppermint oil, which acts as an antagonist at calcium channels in smooth muscle cells—reducing spasms and contractile responses[7]. Peppermint water may also be used topically for its cooling and soothing properties on skin irritation but its primary indication remains oral use for digestive symptoms. It is available over-the-counter in some regions as a general sales list medicine.
