Peptide 1018, also known as IDR-1018, is a synthetic 12-amino acid cationic antimicrobial peptide (AMP) and innate defense regulator derived from bovine bactenecin (Bac2A). It is specifically designed to target and disrupt bacterial biofilms, which are often resistant to conventional antibiotics. The peptide works by binding to and triggering the degradation of the stress-response signaling molecules guanosine tetraphosphate and guanosine pentaphosphate ((p)ppGpp), which are essential for biofilm development and maintenance in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Additionally, peptide 1018 acts as an immunomodulator, enhancing protective innate immune responses while suppressing potentially harmful inflammatory signals. It is being investigated for its potential to treat oral biofilms associated with dental caries and periodontitis, as well as for applications in wound healing and treating multi-drug resistant infections.
