Peptide 946 is an experimental peptide-based cancer vaccine designed to induce an immune response against melanoma cells. It is a mimetic peptide that mimics the ganglioside GD3, a carbohydrate antigen highly expressed on the surface of melanoma cells and other tumors of neuroectodermal origin. By acting as an immunogenic surrogate for the poorly immunogenic GD3 ganglioside, peptide 946 aims to stimulate the production of antibodies and T-cell responses directed at tumor cells. In clinical investigations, it has been studied in combination with various adjuvants, such as QS21 or Montanide ISA-51, and sometimes conjugated to or mixed with helper peptides like the tetanus toxoid peptide to enhance its immunogenicity. The primary development focus was for patients with high-risk or metastatic melanoma.
