Overview
Peramivir is an antiviral drug used for the treatment of acute uncomplicated influenza in patients who have had flu symptoms for no more than two days. It is administered intravenously and belongs to the class of neuraminidase inhibitors. Peramivir acts as a transition-state analogue inhibitor of influenza virus neuraminidase, thereby preventing new viruses from emerging from infected cells. This mechanism blocks the release and spread of influenza A and B viruses within the respiratory tract. The drug was developed by BioCryst Pharmaceuticals and has been approved for use in adults and children (age thresholds may vary by regulatory region). Due to poor oral bioavailability, only intravenous formulations are marketed[1][2][3][5][6][7][8].
