Overview

Perazine is a moderate-potency typical antipsychotic of the phenothiazine class, structurally and pharmacologically similar to chlorpromazine. It acts primarily as a dopamine receptor antagonist, particularly at D2 receptors, which underlies its antipsychotic effects. Perazine also exhibits antagonistic activity at cholinergic (muscarinic), histaminergic (H1), and alpha-1 adrenergic receptors, contributing to its sedative properties and side effect profile. The drug was first introduced in the 1950s and has been used mainly in Europe for the acute and chronic treatment of psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. Its use is largely regional, with primary markets in Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, and former Yugoslavia. Perazine is associated with a relatively low risk of extrapyramidal side effects compared to high-potency typical antipsychotics[1][2][3][5][8].
