Perfadex

Perfadex is a low-potassium dextran (LPD) preservation solution specifically designed for the flushing, cold static storage, and transportation of isolated donor lungs prior to transplantation. Developed and marketed by XVIVO (and previously by Vitrolife and Medisan), the solution contains dextran 40 as its primary active component. Dextran 40 acts as a colloid to maintain oncotic pressure and prevent tissue edema, while also coating the vascular endothelium to inhibit the activation and adhesion of leukocytes and thrombocytes. This mechanism protects the lung tissue from post-ischemic reperfusion injury. The 'Plus' version is a ready-to-use formulation that is pre-buffered with THAM (tris-hydroxymethyl aminomethane) and supplemented with calcium ions.
