Perflexane is a fluorinated hydrocarbon (perfluorocarbon) used as a gaseous ultrasound contrast agent. It is administered in the form of microspheres for intravenous injection to enhance echocardiographic imaging. The primary indication is to opacify the left ventricular chamber and improve delineation of the left ventricular endocardial border in patients with suboptimal echocardiograms. Perflexane acts by increasing cell membrane permeability and enhancing ultrasound reflectivity due to its unique physical properties as a gas encapsulated within lipid microspheres. The active product (Imagent) consists of perflexane gas surrounded by a dimyristoylphosphatidylcholine (DMPC) lipid shell[2][3][5].
