Overview

Perfluoro-tert-butylcyclohexane is a synthetic perfluorocarbon (PFC) emulsion developed as an intravenous oxygen carrier. Originally advanced by Oxygen Biotherapeutics (now Tenax Therapeutics) under the brand name Oxycyte, the compound is chemically inert and possesses a high capacity for dissolving respiratory gases, particularly oxygen. Its primary therapeutic mechanism involves enhancing oxygen delivery to tissues in conditions where blood flow or oxygenation is compromised, such as traumatic brain injury (TBI), hemorrhagic shock, and decompression sickness. Additionally, due to the presence of fluorine atoms, it has been investigated as a diagnostic imaging agent (ABL-101) for mapping inflammation in atherosclerotic plaques using Fluorine-19 Magnetic Resonance Imaging (19F-MRI). Clinical development for TBI reached Phase IIb but was suspended by Tenax in 2014 due to safety concerns regarding thrombocytopenia and immune system interactions, leading to the termination of the program in 2015.
