Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Perfluorobutylpentane (PFBP), also known as F4H5, is a semifluorinated alkane (SFA) small molecule that serves as a high-performance drug delivery vehicle and excipient in ophthalmic medicine. Developed by Novaliq, it is the core component of the EyeSol technology platform and functions as the water-free, preservative-free vehicle in VEVYE (cyclosporine ophthalmic solution 0.1%) for the treatment of dry eye disease. PFBP is chemically inert, amphiphilic, and possesses an exceptionally low surface tension, which allows it to dissolve hydrophobic active pharmaceutical ingredients and spread rapidly across the ocular surface without causing the blurred vision or stinging typically associated with aqueous formulations. Beyond its role as a vehicle, PFBP has been utilized in vitreoretinal surgery as a heavy liquid for temporary intraocular tamponade and has been investigated for use in pulmonary drug delivery systems.
