Perfluorodecalin is a synthetic fluorocarbon compound in which all hydrogen atoms of decalin are replaced by fluorine. It is chemically and biologically inert and notable for its exceptional ability to dissolve large amounts of gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide. This property underlies its use in several medical applications including as an ingredient in artificial blood substitutes (e.g., Fluosol), topical oxygen delivery agents for wound healing, organ preservation solutions (notably the "two-layer method" for pancreas transplants), and liquid breathing research. Perfluorodecalin has also been used as a tamponade agent in ophthalmic surgery and as a component of injectable drug delivery systems to improve resuspension of microparticulates. Its mechanism of action is primarily physical—enhancing local or systemic oxygenation by dissolving and delivering high concentrations of oxygen to tissues[1][3][6][8]. It has also demonstrated anti-inflammatory effects in preclinical models[6]. The compound was developed into marketed products such as Fluosol (by Green Cross Corporation) and Perftoran (marketed in Russia). It remains under investigation for wound healing applications[2][3].
