Overview

Perfluorohexyloctane is a first-in-class, non-aqueous, preservative-free ophthalmic solution developed for the treatment of the signs and symptoms of dry eye disease (DED) associated with meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). As a semifluorinated alkane, it acts by forming a thin, long-lasting layer at the air-tear interface, which stabilizes the tear film and directly addresses excessive tear evaporation—the primary cause of evaporative DED. Originally developed by Novaliq GmbH and licensed to Bausch + Lomb for the U.S. and Canadian markets, it was approved by the FDA in May 2023 under the brand name MIEBO. Clinical trials (GOBI and MOJAVE) demonstrated significant improvements in total corneal fluorescein staining and eye dryness scores compared to saline controls.
