Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Perflutren**, also called perfluoropropane or octafluoropropane, is an inert fluorinated gas with molecular formula C3F8. In ophthalmology, intravitreal perfluoropropane forms a long-acting expandable gas bubble that provides physical tamponade: it apposes a detached retina to the retinal pigment epithelium and limits fluid movement through retinal breaks while healing occurs. FDA-approved UNIPURE C3F8 ophthalmic-gas delivery systems are indicated for treatment of uncomplicated retinal detachment; the gas bubble typically dissipates over approximately 6 to 8 weeks. Perflutren is also the gas constituent of certain ultrasound contrast-microsphere products, but those lipid- or albumin-microsphere formulations are distinct combination products and are not synonymous with neat perfluoropropane gas.
