Overview
Perflutren protein type A is an ultrasound contrast agent used to enhance the quality of echocardiographic images. It consists of gas-filled (perflutren) human serum albumin microspheres that are administered intravenously. When exposed to ultrasound waves, these microspheres provide an echogenic contrast effect in the blood, improving delineation of the left ventricular endocardial border and aiding in the diagnosis of cardiac abnormalities in patients with suboptimal echocardiograms. The drug is not metabolized and is excreted via the lungs. Its primary indication is for opacification of the left ventricle during echocardiography.
