Overview

PerFoam is a topical foam formulation containing 5% permethrin, a synthetic pyrethroid neurotoxin. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of scabies, an infestation caused by the mite *Sarcoptes scabiei*. Permethrin acts by binding to voltage-gated sodium channels on the nerve cell membranes of the parasites, preventing the inactivation of these channels. This leads to prolonged sodium current, delayed repolarization, and stable depolarization of the nerve membrane, resulting in paralysis and eventual death of the mites. Developed by PruGen Pharmaceuticals, the foam delivery system was designed to provide a more cosmetically elegant and easily applied alternative to traditional 5% permethrin creams, potentially improving patient adherence and coverage for widespread infestations.
