Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Peri-Olimel is a multi-chambered, ready-to-use parenteral nutrition emulsion designed for peripheral intravenous administration. Developed by Baxter, it contains a balanced mixture of essential and non-essential amino acids, glucose (carbohydrates), a lipid emulsion, and electrolytes. The lipid component is notably based on olive oil (approximately 80% olive oil and 20% soybean oil), which is rich in the antioxidant alpha-tocopherol and provides a high content of monounsaturated fatty acids, intended to reduce oxidative stress and preserve immune function compared to traditional soybean-based emulsions. With an osmolarity of approximately 750-760 mOsm/L, Peri-Olimel is specifically formulated to be delivered through peripheral veins, making it suitable for short-term nutritional support in patients who cannot meet their requirements orally or enterally, particularly in the perioperative setting for colorectal or biliopancreatic surgeries.
