Periciazine is a first-generation antipsychotic of the phenothiazine class, specifically a piperidine phenothiazine derivative. It is primarily used for the management of schizophrenia and other psychoses, as well as for short-term adjunctive treatment of severe anxiety, psychomotor agitation, and violent or dangerously impulsive behavior. Periciazine acts mainly by antagonizing central dopamine receptors (notably D1) and adrenoceptors (including alpha-1B and alpha-2A adrenergic receptors), leading to its antipsychotic, sedative, adrenolytic, anticholinergic, metabolic, and endocrine effects. Its mechanism involves central adrenergic blockade in subcortical brain regions[1][2][6][8]. The drug has weak antipsychotic properties compared to other typical antipsychotics but is effective in reducing pathologic arousal and affective tension[1][2].
