Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Perillic acid** is a naturally occurring monoterpenoid carboxylic acid, classified as a menthane monoterpenoid, most commonly found as a metabolite of limonene in humans and some plants such as *Perilla frutescens* and *Citrus* species[1][5][7]. It is a highly hydrophobic, practically water-insoluble solid. Perillic acid displays reported **antimicrobial** and **anticancer** activity, with suggested mechanisms partly via interference with posttranslational cysteine isoprenylation affecting small G proteins (such as p21ras), resulting in induction of apoptosis by upregulation of p21, Bax, and caspase-3[2][8]. It has been studied as an antineoplastic agent and is a known biomarker in metabolism studies, and is also suggested as a possible biomarker for Parkinson’s disease[2][8].
