Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PerioChip is a biodegradable dental insert containing 2.5 mg of chlorhexidine digluconate, designed for insertion into periodontal pockets as an adjunctive antimicrobial treatment for adults with moderate to severe chronic periodontitis. The chip is placed after mechanical plaque removal (scaling and root planing) and provides sustained local release of chlorhexidine over 7–10 days, achieving high concentrations in the gingival crevicular fluid without significant systemic absorption[1][2][5][7]. Chlorhexidine acts by disrupting microbial cell membranes, leading to cell death and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against key periodontal pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Prevotella intermedia[1][7]. Clinical studies have shown that PerioChip significantly reduces probing pocket depth compared to scaling and root planing alone[2][10]. It is not an antibiotic but a non-antibiotic antiseptic agent used as part of medium- to long-term periodontal disease management in adults[3][5].
