Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PerioChip is a biodegradable subgingival chip containing 2.5 mg of chlorhexidine gluconate, developed by Dexcel Pharma Technologies Ltd. for the treatment of inflammatory dental conditions, specifically peri-implantitis and periodontitis. The chip is composed of a hydrolyzed gelatin matrix that biodegrades naturally within 7 to 10 days after being inserted into the gum sulcus or periodontal pocket. During this period, it provides a sustained release of chlorhexidine gluconate, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent. Chlorhexidine acts by reacting with the microbial cell surface, destroying the integrity of the cell membrane, and causing cell death. In patients with peri-implantitis—an inflammation affecting the tissues and bone around a stable implant—PerioChip is used as an adjunct to mechanical subgingival debridement to improve clinical outcomes and reduce bone loss.
