Overview

Peripheral blood-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (PB-MSCs) are multipotent stromal (stem) cells isolated from the peripheral blood. They fulfill the criteria for mesenchymal stem/stromal cells as defined by the International Society for Cellular Therapy. These non-hematopoietic, plastic-adherent fibroblastic cells express a characteristic surface marker profile and possess multilineage differentiation potential—capable of osteogenesis, chondrogenesis, and adipogenesis[1][2]. PB-MSCs exhibit immunomodulatory properties and secrete paracrine factors that promote tissue repair through anti-inflammatory effects and support angiogenesis via secretion of proangiogenic factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor[6][7]. Their ease of collection from peripheral blood makes them an attractive source for allogeneic cell therapy in regenerative medicine applications including bone defect healing, cartilage repair/regeneration, ischemic diseases (e.g., cardiac failure), autoimmune diseases (e.g., graft versus host disease), neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Parkinson’s disease), diabetes mellitus type 1, Crohn’s disease, multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus and more[3][5][9].
