Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) are a mixed population of blood cells with round nuclei, primarily consisting of lymphocytes (T cells, B cells, NK cells) and monocytes. They are isolated from peripheral blood through density gradient separation techniques. PBMCs have demonstrated vascular regeneration capabilities through mechanisms such as angiogenesis, macrophage polarization (from M1 to M2 phenotype), and paracrine stimulation. They are being investigated as a cell-based therapy for various conditions, particularly critical limb ischemia in diabetic patients, where they can improve blood flow, promote neovascularization, and enhance wound healing.
