Peripheral blood stem cells (PBSCs) are hematopoietic stem cells collected from peripheral blood rather than bone marrow. These stem cells are key components used in **hematopoietic stem cell transplantation** to reconstitute a patient's blood and immune system following high-dose chemotherapy or radiation, primarily for malignant and some non-malignant disorders. PBSCs are mobilized from the bone marrow into the bloodstream using agents such as granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF, e.g., filgrastim), and collected by apheresis. After collection, the PBSCs are infused intravenously, where they home to the recipient's bone marrow and regenerate the hematopoietic system, restoring blood and immune function. PBSC transplantation may be autologous (using the patient’s own cells) or allogeneic (from a donor). PBSC transplantation is now preferred over marrow harvest due to higher stem cell yield, quicker engraftment, and less procedural morbidity. Indications for PBSC transplantation include various leukemias, lymphomas, multiple myeloma, other blood and immune disorders, and certain autoimmune diseases[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][9][10].
