PermeaDerm is a biosynthetic wound dressing designed to function as a temporary skin substitute for the treatment of partial-thickness burns, donor sites, and chronic wounds. Developed by Dr. Aubrey Woodroof, the product consists of a transparent silicone membrane bonded to a nylon mesh that is coated with porcine-derived Type I collagen. Its unique design features variable porosity (slits) that allow for the controlled passage of wound exudate while maintaining a moist healing environment. PermeaDerm adheres to the wound bed through fibrin-collagen bonding, providing a physical barrier against infection and reducing pain by protecting exposed nerve endings. It is available in different configurations tailored for specific clinical applications, such as PermeaDerm B for burns and PermeaDerm C for chronic ulcers, and is designed to remain in place until the wound heals or is ready for autografting.
