Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Permethrin is a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide and topical anti-parasitic medication used primarily to treat scabies and head lice in adults and children. It is available as a cream or lotion for topical application. Permethrin acts by disrupting sodium channel currents on the nerve cell membranes of arthropods (such as mites and lice), leading to delayed repolarization, paralysis, and death of the parasites. Its absorption through human skin is minimal; it is rapidly metabolized mainly in the liver via ester hydrolysis and excreted primarily in urine. Permethrin is also widely used as an insecticide for clothing or mosquito nets[1][2][3][4][5].
