Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Persantin new formulation is a reformulated version of Persantin 75 mg tablets, developed by Boehringer Ingelheim, containing the active ingredient dipyridamole. Dipyridamole is a small molecule antiplatelet and antithrombotic agent that acts by inhibiting phosphodiesterases (specifically PDE3 and PDE5) and adenosine deaminase, as well as blocking the cellular reuptake of adenosine via equilibrative nucleoside transporters (ENT1 and ENT2). These actions lead to increased intracellular levels of cAMP and cGMP, thereby preventing platelet aggregation and adhesion. The drug is indicated for the prevention of postoperative thromboembolic complications, specifically as an adjunct to coumarin anticoagulants (such as warfarin) following cardiac valve replacement. The 'new formulation' was evaluated in a crossover pharmacokinetic study comparing its bioavailability and pharmacokinetics to the commercial formulation in healthy volunteers.
