Overview

Pertussis filamentous haemagglutinin (FHA) is a large, 220 kDa cell-surface protein produced by *Bordetella pertussis* that serves as a critical adhesin for bacterial colonization of the respiratory tract. It mediates attachment to ciliated respiratory epithelial cells and leukocytes by binding to various host cell receptors, including galactose-containing glycoconjugates and the CR3 integrin (CD11b/CD18). As a key component of acellular pertussis (aP) vaccines, FHA is used to induce a protective immune response, primarily through the production of neutralizing antibodies that inhibit bacterial adherence and promote opsonization. The University of Antwerp has been a prominent site for the clinical development and evaluation of FHA-containing vaccines, including their use in multi-valent combinations with diphtheria and tetanus toxoids for the prevention of pertussis in infants, adolescents, and adults.
