Overview

Pertussis syrup (also known as Bai-Ri-Ke syrup or BRK) is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospital preparation developed by Tianjin Second People's Hospital. It is formulated as an oral syrup containing multiple herbal ingredients, including bitter apricot seed, honey-fried loquat leaf, stemona root, trichosanthes fruit, and bamboo shavings. The syrup is primarily indicated for the treatment of pertussis (whooping cough) and other cough and asthma-related conditions in children, working by clearing the lungs, resolving phlegm, and relieving cough. Clinical and preclinical studies have also investigated its therapeutic effects on acute lung injury (ALI) and its impact on intestinal flora based on the TCM theory of the lung and large intestine being interior-exteriorly related.
