Overview

Pethidine + propofol is a combination of two pharmaceutical agents used together for procedural sedation and analgesia, particularly in settings such as endoscopy or minor surgical procedures. Pethidine (also known as meperidine) is a synthetic opioid analgesic that acts primarily as an agonist at the mu-opioid receptor, providing pain relief and some sedation. Propofol is an intravenous anesthetic agent that induces hypnosis and sedation by potentiating the inhibitory neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptor. The combination leverages the sedative-hypnotic effects of propofol with the analgesic properties of pethidine to achieve both comfort and amnesia during procedures. This regimen may be chosen for its rapid onset, controllable depth of anesthesia, and relatively quick recovery profile compared to traditional regimens using benzodiazepines plus opioids[1][3][6]. Both drugs are approved pharmaceuticals but are not marketed together as a fixed-dose product; their use in combination is determined by clinical protocol.
