Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Vaseline ointment application refers to the topical administration of petrolatum (petroleum jelly), which is used as an inert placebo/comparator in clinical research. In a randomized, double-blind, Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT02554123) sponsored by Hospital General Universitario de Elche, it was applied topically every 12 hours for 7 days following Milligan-Morgan hemorrhoidectomy to evaluate the reduction of postoperative pain and morphine requirements compared to Vitamin E ointment. As a pure petrolatum-based ointment, it contains no active pharmaceutical ingredient, has no known specific biological target, and possesses no pharmacological modality, functioning purely as a physical barrier, emollient, and vehicle/placebo.
