Peumus boldus leaf

Peumus boldus leaf is the dried or processed leaf of the Peumus boldus Molina tree, commonly known as "boldo." It is used primarily as a traditional herbal medicine. Boldo leaves contain several bioactive compounds such as alkaloids (notably boldine), essential oils (including ascaridole), and flavonoids. The extract and its constituents have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects in vitro and animal studies. Traditionally, it has been used for relief of symptoms of dyspepsia (indigestion) and mild spasmodic disorders of the gastrointestinal tract. Other investigated applications include diabetes management, cancer prevention support, sun protection formulations, osteoporosis prevention strategies, renoprotection (kidney health), atopic dermatitis treatment support, laxative use for constipation relief, choleretic action to stimulate bile secretion in mild hepatobiliary dysfunctions or digestive complaints. However clinical trial data are lacking to recommend its use for any indication[1][3][4][5]. The European Medicines Agency recognizes it only for traditional use based on long-standing experience[5].
