PF-07921188 (also known as BNT167) is a modified RNA (modRNA) vaccine candidate being co-developed by Pfizer and BioNTech for the prevention of shingles (herpes zoster) in healthy adults. The vaccine utilizes BioNTech's proprietary mRNA technology to encode specific antigens of the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV), aiming to stimulate a potent and durable immune response, including both humoral (neutralizing antibodies) and cellular (T-cell) immunity. By leveraging the mRNA platform, the vaccine is designed to potentially offer improved tolerability and manufacturing scalability compared to existing recombinant protein-based shingles vaccines. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials to determine the optimal dose level, formulation, and schedule for preventing viral reactivation in older adults.
