Overview

PF-07923567 is an investigational vaccine candidate developed by Pfizer for the prevention of infections caused by Extraintestinal Pathogenic Escherichia coli (ExPEC). ExPEC is a major human pathogen responsible for a significant burden of disease, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), bacteremia, and sepsis, particularly in older adults. The vaccine program, as evaluated in Phase 1 clinical trials (such as NCT05103397), involved the testing of multiple candidate formulations (designated as E. coli vaccines 1 through 5) to assess their safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity. These candidates are designed to target specific bacterial antigens to induce a protective immune response, likely through the production of opsonophagocytic antibodies that facilitate bacterial clearance. While Pfizer acquired a more advanced 9-valent ExPEC vaccine (PF-07202954) from Janssen in 2023, PF-07923567 represents Pfizer's internal development efforts in this therapeutic area.
