PF-07923567 (also known as BNT167) is an investigational nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (modRNA) vaccine candidate developed by Pfizer and BioNTech for the prevention of shingles (herpes zoster) in healthy adults. The vaccine utilizes the same mRNA technology platform as the Comirnaty COVID-19 vaccine, delivering genetic instructions for the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) glycoprotein E (gE) via lipid nanoparticles. Glycoprotein E is a critical antigen for inducing both neutralizing antibodies and T-cell mediated immune responses. By expressing this antigen in host cells, the vaccine aims to bolster the immune system's ability to prevent the reactivation of latent VZV, which causes shingles. It is currently being evaluated in Phase 1/2 clinical trials to assess its safety, tolerability, and immunogenicity profile compared to existing standard-of-care shingles vaccines.
