Drug intelligence / Profile preview
pF48 is a recombinant human hemoglobin variant expressed in *Escherichia coli* that incorporates targeted mutations designed to modulate nitric oxide metabolism. Developed by researchers at University College London, the University of Essex, and King's College London, pF48 is designed to reduce oxidative stress, improve hemodynamics, and enhance survival in ischemia-reperfusion injury (such as hemorrhage-reperfusion injury) without the typical vasoconstrictive side effects associated with acellular hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers (HBOCs). In animal models, pF48 administration also induces a marked diuresis and natriuresis, potentially mediated by the downstream inhibition of renal Na+/K+-ATPase and/or Na+/K+/2Cl- cotransporter systems.
