Overview

The Pfizer Bivalent COVID-19 Vaccine is a nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech to provide protection against SARS-CoV-2. It is a bivalent formulation containing mRNA encoding the spike (S) protein of the original SARS-CoV-2 strain and mRNA encoding the spike protein of Omicron variants (either BA.1 or BA.4/BA.5). The vaccine utilizes lipid nanoparticle (LNP) technology to deliver the mRNA into host cells, where it is translated into the viral spike proteins. These proteins then trigger an adaptive immune response, including the production of neutralizing antibodies and the activation of T-cells. This specific vaccine is being evaluated in the BOOST-IC trial, led by Monash University, to determine optimized vaccination schedules and immunogenicity in immunocompromised populations who were largely excluded from initial registration trials.
