Overview

Pfizer's second-generation modified RNA (modRNA) influenza vaccine is an investigational nucleoside-modified messenger RNA vaccine candidate developed in partnership with BioNTech. It is designed to prevent influenza by delivering modRNA that encodes the hemagglutinin (HA) proteins of specific influenza virus strains. Once injected, the modRNA instructs host cells to produce these proteins, which then act as antigens to stimulate a protective immune response. This second-generation platform aims to improve upon the immunogenicity of earlier mRNA vaccine iterations and standard-of-care influenza vaccines. It is currently in Phase 2 clinical development (NCT06436703), where it is being evaluated as a trivalent vaccine in healthy adults aged 18 to 64 years.
