Overview

PfRAS (Plasmodium falciparum Radiation-Attenuated Sporozoites) is a vaccine designed to induce protective immunity against malaria. It consists of Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites that have been attenuated through radiation, rendering them unable to replicate in the host. Administered via mosquito bite, PfRAS aims to stimulate a robust immune response, primarily involving CD8+ T cells, which recognize parasite-derived peptides on infected hepatocytes, thereby preventing the development of malaria. Clinical trials have investigated its safety, tolerability, and efficacy in inducing sterilizing immunity.
