Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Pfs230D1-ferritin is a single-component, self-assembling 24-copy nanoparticle vaccine designed to block the transmission of *Plasmodium falciparum* malaria. Developed by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the vaccine consists of Domain 1 of the *P. falciparum* gametocyte surface protein Pfs230 (Pfs230D1) genetically fused to *Helicobacter pylori* ferritin. This fusion allows the self-assembly of stable, homogenous nanoparticles that present potent transmission-blocking conformational epitopes of Pfs230D1. By eliciting antibodies that target Pfs230, the vaccine aims to disrupt the fertilization and development of the malaria parasite within the mosquito midgut after the vector feeds on an infected human host, thereby breaking the cycle of transmission.
