The Pfs230D1M virosome vaccine is a malaria transmission-blocking vaccine (TBV) candidate developed by Mymetics Corporation in collaboration with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). It utilizes Mymetics' proprietary virosome platform, which consists of lipid-based nanoparticles containing functional viral fusion proteins and Toll-like receptor (TLR) agonists as adjuvants. The active component is Pfs230D1M, a recombinant protein fragment representing the N-terminal prodomain and domain 1 (amino acids 542-736) of the *Plasmodium falciparum* Pfs230 protein. Pfs230 is a surface antigen expressed on the gametocytes and gametes of the parasite. The vaccine is designed to induce antibodies in the human host that, when ingested by a mosquito during a blood meal, prevent the development of the parasite within the mosquito midgut, thereby interrupting the cycle of malaria transmission. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that this virosome formulation can significantly reduce the transmission of *Plasmodium falciparum* to mosquitoes.
