Overview

PfSPZ Vaccine is a live-attenuated malaria vaccine developed by Sanaria Inc., consisting of aseptic, purified, radiation-attenuated, and cryopreserved Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites. The vaccine is designed to provide high-level protection against malaria by targeting the pre-erythrocytic stage of the parasite's life cycle. It is uniquely administered via direct venous inoculation (DVI) to ensure optimal delivery to the liver. The development of PfSPZ Vaccine has been supported by a broad consortium including the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), and the Government of Equatorial Guinea. Clinical evaluation has progressed to Phase 3 trials, with studies conducted across diverse populations including infants, children, and adults in both malaria-endemic regions of Africa and Southeast Asia, as well as malaria-naive individuals in the United States.
