Overview

PG-9 is a synthetic small molecule research compound that functions as a presynaptic cholinergic modulator. Described in the mid-1990s by researchers at the University of Florence, it was developed as part of a series of tropane-based esters investigated for their ability to enhance acetylcholine release. Pharmacologically, PG-9 has been studied for its potential as a nootropic (cognition enhancer) and analgesic agent, showing activity in preclinical models of memory and pain. Chemically, it is the maleate salt of a brominated phenylpropionic acid ester of a tropane derivative. It is currently utilized primarily as a pharmacological tool in neuroscience research to investigate cholinergic signaling pathways and is not approved for therapeutic use in humans.
