Overview

PG-NS (Porphyrin-derived Graphene-like Nanosheets) is an experimental nanostructured organic therapeutic platform designed for the treatment of radiation-induced mucositis. The platform consists of graphene-like nanosheets synthesized using porphyrin templates, which are functionalized with CD63-specific aptamers. This design enables PG-NS to selectively capture and sequester small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) released from radiation-damaged tissues, thereby preventing the activation of the STING (stimulator of interferon genes) pathway in macrophages and suppressing excessive inflammation. Additionally, the porphyrin-derived structure of the nanosheets allows them to act as scavengers for reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS), providing a dual-action approach to mitigating mucosal damage and improving quality of life for patients undergoing radiotherapy for head and neck cancer.
