Overview

PGN1164 is a small molecule 5-HT4 receptor antagonist that was developed by Pharmagene PLC for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The compound was the lead candidate in Pharmagene's "R1" drug discovery program, which utilized the company's proprietary human tissue-based technology to identify and validate therapeutic targets. In June 2005, Pharmagene announced that PGN1164 failed to demonstrate a statistically significant improvement over placebo in a Phase IIa clinical trial for IBS. Due to these disappointing results, the company discontinued the development of the compound to focus on other pipeline assets and its human tissue services business. Pharmagene subsequently merged with Asterand in 2006.
