Overview

An investigational bacteriophage therapy being developed by Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences for the treatment of chronic relapsing urinary tract infections (UTIs). [2] It is being evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial for UTIs caused by extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-positive Enterobacteriaceae in renal transplant recipients. Bacteriophages are viruses that specifically infect and destroy bacteria through lysis, offering a potential alternative to conventional antibiotics, particularly in cases of multidrug-resistant infections. [2, 5, 8] The therapy is administered directly into the bladder via intravesical instillation. [1, 2]
