Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Phage SL is a capsule-independent bacteriophage belonging to the class Caudoviricetes, isolated from hospital wastewater for the treatment of multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii infections. Unlike typical A. baumannii phages that rely on capsular polysaccharide recognition, phage SL utilizes its long tail fibers to bind to a capsule-independent host receptor, enabling it to infect both capsulated and capsule-deficient clinical isolates. In preclinical studies, phage SL demonstrated a broad host range and, when combined with capsule-dependent phages, significantly delayed the emergence of resistant bacterial subpopulations. An engineered variant, SL::dpo, which expresses a heterologous capsular depolymerase, has also been developed to enhance early-phase bacterial clearance in human serum models.
