Overview

PhageBank is a personalized bacteriophage therapy platform developed by Adaptive Phage Therapeutics (APT) to treat multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacterial infections. The approach utilizes an expansive, ever-growing library of lytic bacteriophages that are matched to a patient's specific bacterial isolate using a proprietary susceptibility assay developed in collaboration with Mayo Clinic Laboratories. Once a match is identified, the selected phages are administered to the patient to specifically target and lyse the pathogenic bacteria while sparing the host's natural microbiome and human cells. This 'adaptive' nature allows the therapy to evolve alongside bacterial resistance by adding new phages to the library. The technology was originally developed by the U.S. Department of Defense and the NIH, and it is currently being evaluated in clinical trials for indications such as prosthetic joint infections, diabetic foot osteomyelitis, and cystic fibrosis-related lung infections.
