Overview

Phagoburn is a standardized cocktail of 12 lytic bacteriophages specifically designed to treat skin infections in burn patients caused by *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*. Developed by Pherecydes Pharma as part of a large-scale European collaborative project, the therapy aims to provide an alternative to traditional antibiotics, particularly for multi-drug resistant (MDR) infections. The phages work by binding to specific receptors on the bacterial cell wall, injecting their genetic material, and hijacking the bacterial machinery to replicate, ultimately leading to bacterial lysis and the release of new progeny phages. Although the landmark Phase 1/2 clinical trial faced stability and concentration challenges, Phagoburn remains a pioneering effort in the clinical validation of phage therapy under GMP conditions.
