Phalaris arundinacea pollen is an allergenic extract derived from the pollen of reed canary grass, a perennial C3 grass widely distributed in temperate regions. It is utilized clinically for the diagnosis and treatment of grass pollen-induced allergic diseases, such as seasonal allergic rhinitis, allergic conjunctivitis, and allergic asthma. The extract contains a complex mixture of proteins, including Group 1 and Group 5 grass allergens, which are recognized by IgE antibodies in sensitized individuals. In diagnostic applications, such as skin prick testing, the extract induces mast cell degranulation and a subsequent wheal-and-flare reaction. In allergen immunotherapy (AIT), repeated administration of the extract at increasing doses aims to modify the underlying immune response, promoting the development of regulatory T cells (Tregs) and the production of IgG4 blocking antibodies, thereby inducing long-term clinical tolerance.
